Bullhorn candidate search guide
Bullhorn candidate search: a practical workflow for recruiters.
Use Bullhorn's search controls to find a reviewable set of candidates, then check the evidence and relationship context before deciding who to contact.
Prepare the search in plain language
Write the job outcome, must-have evidence, useful alternatives and details to confirm later. This becomes the standard against which you judge the search, rather than letting the available filters define the requirement.
List title and skill variations before building the query. Bullhorn supports keyword and Boolean approaches, but the search still depends on the wording and fields present in your records.
Build the first Advanced Search
Bullhorn's official documentation says Advanced Search can combine keywords, Boolean logic and field-level filters. Start with the central experience and one or two alternatives. Preview the result count before adding stricter filters.
If a filter removes too many candidates, loosen it and inspect the underlying records. A missing field is not proof that the candidate lacks the experience. It means the recruiter needs another source of evidence.
- Use OR for credible title or terminology variations
- Use AND only for requirements that must coexist
- Use NOT carefully, because the excluded word may appear in a different context
- Add location, status and date filters after checking the broad result set
Use the result count as a diagnostic
Bullhorn can update the number of matching candidates as criteria change. Treat that count as feedback on the query, not as a quality score. A large number can still be weak, while a small number can result from incomplete data.
Change one condition at a time. This shows which filter caused the largest drop and makes the search easier for another recruiter to understand or reproduce.
Name and save searches for real workflows
Bullhorn's Quick Search can reopen recent and saved candidate searches. Use names that describe the hiring need and any important limitation. Avoid vague labels such as final search or good candidates.
Revisit saved searches when the requirement changes. A saved query preserves criteria, not the truth about who is available or interested today.
Review records, not just matches
Open each promising profile and locate the evidence that caused the match. Check CV history, structured fields, notes and recent activity. Look for conflicting information as well as supporting information.
Then review the relationship: who spoke to the candidate, what happened, what they wanted and whether their contact preferences allow a new approach. The result list starts the review. It does not finish it.
Where SuperFront can sit beside Bullhorn
SuperFront's Bullhorn integration page describes a workflow where the existing CRM remains in place while recruiters search connected candidate data, review evidence and move selected people into outreach. The exact behaviour depends on the fields, permissions and configuration available to the agency.
That makes the evaluation question practical: can the team find the right records, understand why they appear and preserve useful outcomes for the next recruiter? Test the workflow against a real brief before changing a live process.
Frequently asked questions
Useful answers before you put the workflow into practice.
Can Bullhorn candidate search use Boolean logic?
Bullhorn's official Candidate List documentation says Advanced Search can use AND, OR, NOT and parentheses alongside keywords and field filters.
Can recruiters save Bullhorn candidate searches?
Yes. Bullhorn's documentation describes saved searches and a Quick Search view for reopening recent or saved candidate searches.
Does a Bullhorn search result prove a candidate is suitable?
No. It identifies records that match the chosen criteria. A recruiter still needs to review the underlying evidence, check current information and make the decision.
